Calathea 'Freddie' is a stunning member of the Marantaceae family, known for its elongated, lance-shaped leaves patterned with bold, dark green stripes against a pale green background. This unique foliage gives the plant a zebra-like appearance and a soft, airy elegance. Like all calatheas, Freddie moves its leaves up at night—a phenomenon known as nyctinasty, which makes it feel like your plant has a personality of its own.
It brings a vibrant, tropical vibe to any indoor space and is especially popular for its decorative appeal and easy integration into shaded or low-light interiors.
🌱 Care Tips:
-
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions but should be kept out of direct sun, which may bleach or scorch the leaves. -
Water:
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil is slightly dry. Use filtered or distilled water if your tap water is high in minerals, as Calatheas are sensitive. -
Humidity:
Thrives in high humidity. Mist regularly or place near a humidifier to keep the leaves lush and healthy. -
Temperature:
Ideal temperature range is 18°C to 26°C (65°F to 80°F). Avoid drafts, sudden temperature changes, and cold air. -
Soil:
Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture—peat-based or aroid mixes work well. -
Fertiliser:
Feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer. Skip fertilising in winter. -
Pet Friendly:
✅ Yes! Calathea 'Freddie' is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for pet-loving homes.
