🌿 Begonia cleopatrae
Common Name: Maple Leaf Begonia, Cleopatra Begonia
Origin: Native to the Philippines
Begonia cleopatrae is a striking foliage plant cherished for its maple-shaped leaves marked with deep bronze, olive green, and reddish tones. Each leaf features fine, fuzzy hairs and a dramatic veining pattern that makes it look almost hand-painted. The undersides often have a rich burgundy hue, adding to its ornamental appeal.
This begonia is ideal for those who appreciate exotic, textured leaves. It thrives in terrariums or humid indoor environments, where its compact growth and dramatic appearance can truly shine.
🌱 Care Tips:
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the delicate foliage, while too little light may fade the color and stunt growth.
Water:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 1–2 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid letting water sit on the leaves.
Humidity:
Loves high humidity (ideally above 60%). Perfect for terrariums or bathrooms. If your home is dry, consider using a humidifier or pebble tray.
Temperature:
Best in temperatures between 18°C to 24°C (65°F to 75°F). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
Soil:
Use a light, well-draining mix, like an African violet or aroid mix with added perlite and peat moss.
Fertiliser:
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, diluted fertiliser. Skip feeding in winter.
Pet Friendly:
⚠️ No – Like most begonias, Begonia cleopatrae is toxic to pets if ingested. Keep out of reach of curious pets.
